After a successful journey in a pretty tough January, Juve had to deal with an even more difficult set of games in February as a month consisting of 2 games vs Inter, a home battle vs Roma, an away clash vs Napoli, the first leg of UCL round of 16 vs Porto in Portugal, an easy game vs Crotone and finally, a visit to ever-problematic Bentegodi never meant to be easy.
Andrea Pirlo's boys kicked off well by eliminating the Nerazzurri from Coppa and beating Roma in Serie A, but after that everything went south. In the remaining 4 games, Bianconeri only won once vs Crotone, lost 2 games to Napoli & Porto shared the points with Verona.
In these 7 games, Juventus were not able to score more than 9 goals, a disastrous figure. In the defensive phase, things were a bit better by conceding only 5 goals which aren't perfect but isn't bad either and keeping a clean sheet on 3 of the 7 occasions.
Cristiano Ronaldo with 6 goals was the top scorer, while Chiesa, Alex Sandro, Ramsey, and Rabiot each with one assist were the [best] assist providers of Juve.
In spite of the positive outings of Buffon, Danilo, and Aaron Ramsey; Matthijs de Ligt, Federico Chiesa, and Cristiano Ronaldo were the obvious 3 best players of Juventus in the last month and unlike January there is no competition for the podium.
Matthijs de Ligt
Juve may have kept only 2 clean sheets in de Ligt's 6 stars but the fact is, it was for De Ligt that Juve didn't concede more. He was like a wall in all of the games, preventing the opposition from threatening the Old Lady. The highlight of his month has to be the second leg vs Inter, where the way he took care of Romelu Lukaku, who seems to be the most in-form player of Serie A, was nothing short of a masterpiece as the Belgian international was completely under control. It's funny how in the presence of De Ligt Juve have been hit by their own players harder than the attackers they faced.
Although February can't be seen a successful month for the king by the standards Ronaldo has set for himself, he has 4 goals more than the total number of goals scored by all his team-mates and therefore was still one of the bests Juventus players in February.
Ronaldo started February strong. He scored 2 gigantic goals in San Siro vs Inter, he scored a mesmerizing golf kick goal while being robbed off of a tap-in goal by an own-goal vs Roma. After the first two games of the month, he had to experience not the best period of his season; first, he failed to score any of his 3 clear cut chances vs Inter, afterwards he failed to deliver in the most important week of the season so far when Juventus lost two major games vs Napoli and Porto. In the last two games of February CR7 put his scoring shoes on again and put two past Cordaz vs Crotone and scored the Bianconeri's only goal at Bentegodi vs Verona.
Chiesa has been the best Juventus player of 2021. He wasn't a popular signing but since joining the Bianconeri, he has impressed the fans and he's quite a fan favorite right now.
He had only 1 goal and 1 assist in the last month but goals and assists can't demonstrate his importance because most of his passes and crosses get wasted. The spark he has, that sudden explosion, it is unique among Juventus players, and it helps the team to create something, even in the most difficult situations in the most difficult games.
In the last month, he scored the most important goal of the season for the Bianconeri so far. Without Chiesa's perfect strike vs Porto, Juve would be totally out of the Champions League, but now thanks to his goal, there is a ray of chance.
To wrap it all, it is a close call between Ronaldo and Chiesa. Ronaldo was better statistically than Chiesa, but Chiesa had a better consistency, as the Italian international was able to hurt the opponents also in the games Juve were bad as a team. Although Ronaldo helped Juve to secure a place in the final of Coppa Italia, Chiesa scored a goal that keeps the Champions League hope alive which eventually gives Federico Chiesa the edge over Ronaldo as the best player of the month.
